The Citric Acid Passivation spray is a ready to use, high quality blend to clean and passivate stainless steel surfaces.  It is offered in 1 gallon, 2.5 gallon, 55 gallon drums and 32 oz spray bottles.

It is formulated as a very effective, low cost and efficient way to passivate small and large stainless steel surfaces.

Created to remove contaminants and all free iron that may have accumulated on the metal surface during fabrication or after a contamination event.  Creating a clean surface for the chrome oxide levels to reform and restore its corrosion resistant properties.

Application:

When applicable use our weld cleaning process to remove weld discoloration on and around welded areas first before the application of the passivation spray.

Spray or immerse parts to be cleaned with the passivation spray to completely wet the surface.  Ensure areas like overlapping seams, in crevices or areas where rust is likely are fully saturated.  Surface must remain wet for a period of 15-30 minutes, reapply if needed during that time.  After sufficient time has passed, rinse parts with clean water.  Dry surface with a clean dry cloth or use pressurized air to dry.  Allow surface to dry completely before use or before contact with food products.

The Citric Acid Passivation spray will not harm stainless steel surfaces, but a small area to test should be preformed to guarantee results.

Citric Acid Passivation

Citric Acid passivation was developed by Adolf Coors brewing company for the passivation of the inside of beer kegs. It offers an effective alternative to nitric acid passivation with less handling concerns and is considered environmentally friendly being on the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) list for the FDA making it ideal for food and beverage applications.

When comparing nitric vs citric passivation, citric acid solutions can effectively passivate a wider range of stainless-steel alloys compared to any one nitric acid passivation solution, allowing for assemblies of several stainless-steel alloys to be passivated.

Passivation chemistries remove free iron from the surface but can also remove some nickel and chromium from stainless steel. Removing nickel and chrome reduces the corrosion resistant material at the surface leaving a thinner oxide layer. Citric acid passivation selectively removes iron over nickel and chromium leaving a thicker corrosion resistant oxide layer than nitric acid passivation

With proper usage this product complies with ASTM A967 (ASTM 380) standards for passivation.
